I started babysitting for Dane (Robert’s middle name) when he was four years old. Eventually I stopped babysitting for most families but continued to watch him and his brothers until last year because of how much I loved being with them.

Comments regarding handling conflict (not required)

Dane is the oldest of three boys. When there were arguments I would explain to him that I needed his help so his brothers would listen. He would go to his room at night and quietly read so I could get his younger siblings ready for bed. He knew that he was responsible for their behavior even when he couldn’t control how they reacted. This has always been impressive to me.

When Dane was younger I gave him a snowboard lesson. As a skilled skier, it was difficult for him to be on the snow as a beginner again but you wouldn’t know it by his attitude. He is excited to be challenged. When we went to the pump track in Hood River he showed me the tricks he could do on his scooter. I suggested he try to ride my cruiser skateboard. At first he said he wanted to keep riding his scooter but once he saw his younger brothers trying he realized that even though it seemed intimidating, the way to improve was to force himself to try. By the end of our session he was still better at riding his scooter but he was proud he had pushed himself.

What would you consider this person’s strengths and/or weaknesses?

Dane hasn’t had a job before. He has been on countless sports teams, but this will be the first time he has bosses and needs to be accountable for himself other than doing so in school or on a team.

Is there anything else you feel would be important for us to know, and if so, please describe?

As a young teenager a couple years ago, I remember him continually helping his younger brother tie his shoes. This struck me because most teenage boys would tell their sibling to do it themself.
We played basketball with his little brothers three years ago and Dane modified the rules for his youngest brother. He seems to undertand other people’s learning styles. I haven’t seen this from many teenagers. Dane and I have talked about being an instructor for at least three years. It’s something that he has seen me do for him and one of his brothers and I know our ski school will be a more successful one with him in it. I vouch to personally check in on him to ensure his success at Mt. Hood Meadows.
